Warhound Preview
Techland
FPS, Release Date: Q4 2007

No this isn't Crysis, although when I first watched the video I had a feeling they were using the same engine. In Warhound you play as a freelance mercenary that chooses his own path; missions will be available to you but just like Rambo, the path you take is entirely up to you. Developed by Techland (out of Poland), Warhound is a first person shooter at heart with a few other elements built in that really reminds me of another game we just recently previewed in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl. Not only do you get to choose which missions and when, but you also get to improve your mercenary character as the game progresses almost as if it were an RPG. Another similarity is that you're not alone; other mercernaries are out there that you'll eventually have to confront, which really makes Warhound not your average new first person shooter with flashy graphics.
From what we've heard through our sources the majority of your missions will take place in these jungle environments, which kinda sucks because it'd be fun to see some urban settings mixed in for a little variety. Nevertheless, the game looks like a blast so that probably won't even be an issue. To delve into the character enhancements/specializations a little deeper, Techland tells us that you'll be able to take your character in three different directions: Weapon. Mechanic, or Alpinist. Weapon specialization gives the player the ability to man just about any weapon in the game, big or small in his missions. If you choose the mechanic route you'll be able to steal cars and tanks, which doesn't sound all that bad does it? The third option is the Alpinist, which allows the player to move easier through and over the terrain like Rambo or Chuck Norris. Lots and lots of replay value here folks.

As you can see from the droolriffic video, Warhound looks ridiculously good looking and smells of rich mahagoney. While it's great to see, it may be disheartening for a lot of PC gamers (it's coming out for the 360 though too!) out there who may not have a powerful enough rig to handle this DX10 beast. On the plus side, we won't see Warhounds until the end of the year at the earliest, so you've got plenty of time to save up some upgrade money; you can always throw down for a 360 too, since Warhounds will be released for both. Oh I almost forgot to mention that Techland is throwing in 32 player multiplayer online support (at least for the PC right now), so that will be exciting to see as we get closer to Q4. Be absolutely sure you watch this friggin video, and don't forget we've got screenshots below and as the news breaks, we'll be here to clean it up. And uh, post it.
