The Promise Review

Remember Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon? You liked that one didn't you; everyone did. Well the cinematographer from that award winning film is back for more in an epic martial arts film entitled, The Promise. "The Promise" quite frankly everything that "Crouching Tiger" was times ten, and it's got the hardware to prove it. In 2005 it was nominated for a Golden Globe for the Best Foreign Language Film, and the nomination was well deserved. This movie is martial arts at it's finest combined with absolutely glorious visuals, a rock solid story, and heart-pumping action sequences that put the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy to shame. Every guy out there who enjoyed "Crouching Tiger" needs to see this film, because in my oh so humble opinion it's a much better product. Please remember however that this is a foreign film, so get ready for a lot of reading via English subtitles; unless of course, you can speak and understand Mandarin Chinese.
"The Promise" packs a sweet feature presentation, but what about the extra features; how do those stack up? Warner Bros decided to package in a huge "Making Of" feature onto the disc, as well as some very slick additional scenes along with the original theatrical trailer. From a quality standpoint I'm very happy with the special features end, but as far as quantity goes I'm a little disappointed. I realize this is probably due to the fact that "The Promise" wasn't as successful as "Crouching Tiger", but it still deserves a little more to make this a worthwhile purchase. At the very least The Promise is a must-rent for any action/martial arts fan. After you rent it then you can decide if it's worth the purchase.
