Queer Duck: The Movie Review
Icebox (Television)
September 12th, 2006
You probably haven't heard of "Queer Duck: The Movie"; I'll be honest, I haven't either. I bet you have heard the name of the director and writer though. Does the name Mike Reiss ring any bells upstairs, or are you stumped? Mike Reis just happened to be a co-creator of the most popular television cartoon in history, "The Simpsons". I bet you've heard of some of these voiceover actors too: Andy Dick, Conan O'Brien, Tim Curry, and David Duchovny. Not a bad cast eh der hoser? Alright, so this "Queer Duck" movie has an insane cast and a pretty damn good creator/writer behind it, so I take it's a cartoon right? You are correct, it is a cartoon and it's a damn funny one. If you couldn't guess it, the character "Queer Duck" is gay, and so are a lot of his friends like Bi-Polar Bear, Openly Gator (how can you not laugh at that?), and Oscar Wildcat. BBC Television dubbed this cartoon as, "One of the 100 greatest cartoons of all time", and after watching this 72 minute cartoon film I am gonna hafta agree with 'em.
While the main feature is stellar and well worth the 14 or 15 bucks you'll pay for this DVD, the special features fall a little short of expectations. I don't know, maybe other titles that jam pack the extras in have made me a greedy little webmaster; ah well. You do get five original Queer Duck animated shorts though, which are very cool and give you a glimpse of what the cartoon was like when it was originally created online years ago. Also included on the DVD are behind the scenes footage and a number of very funny features, one of them called, "Getting the Right Homosexual." Queer Duck: The Movie is a hilarious cartoon with a great script and an even better cast, but the DVD itself falls a little short. They did come up with a great slogan though for the movie, "He Can't Even Fly Straight!"; haha, I'll give them props for that. As usual we're giving away a free copy of Queer Duck this month in the forums, so be sure to stop in and take it home!
