Mothra vs Godzilla Remastered Review
Toho
March 30th, 2007
Godzilla is back, and he's been completely remastered to look better than ever on the latest remastered DVD release of Mothra vs Godzilla. If you've ever considered picking up the Godzilla series on DVD, now is the best time to do so because Toho (the production company behind Godzilla) has begun re-releasing every Godzilla film as a remastered DVD, and the quality is downright phenomenal. If you're unfamiliar with the storyline, here's quick synopsis to bring you up to speed: "After a fierce typhoon, a mysterious gigantic egg washes ashore. The win fairies of Infant Island plea for the egg's return to Mothra, its rightful owner, but it's too late - greedy promoters have turned it into an amusement park attraction. Meanwhile, Godzilla reawakens and tramples across Japan, heading straight for the big egg. Can mothra save her offspring from Godzilla? Will Japan survive this epic monster battle?" If you haven't seen this wonderful horror classic, there's only one way to find out: you have to watch it! Overall Mothra vs Godzilla is a great film, but like any DVD I have the pleasure of reviewing, what about the special features?
It's only fair to cut Toho some slack with this DVD series because these are remastered films, meaning it's damn near impossible to come up with the usual slew of special features. They did do a nice job by including both versions of the film (Japan and US) onto one DVD however, and they even threw in some very cool audio commentary from two of the producers (although you gotta use your DVD remote and switch to audio track 2 to access them). You're also looking at a slide show of the original movie posters, as well as a bio/tribute to Akira Ifukube that is pretty insightful. Considering this film was released more than 50 years ago, I'm nothing but utterly impressed with the remastered DVD release of Mothra vs Godzilla. Film buffs probably already have this DVD preordered, but as for the rest of us head down to the video store and pick it up as a rental; that is, if you haven't seen the film before. If you like it, it defintely deserves a spot on your movie shelf. Overall an outstanding DVD considering how old this movie is!
