Blood Diamond Special Edition Review
Warner Home Video
March 28th, 2007
When a film gets nominated for five Academy Awards, that usually means the following DVD deserves a spot on your movie shelf. Many times however with blockbuster films, publishing companies get lazy and just try and sell the DVD without any quality special features; attempting to sell discs just by name recognition of the given film. Well I'm happy to report that Blood Diamond, the two-disc special edition is not one of them; on the other hand, this DVD release is arguably one of the best packages I've ever seen when you look not only at the feature presentation, but the special features as well. If you haven't witnessed the masterpiece that is Blood Diamond, you need to immediately because there's a damn good reason why this outstanding picture got nominated for five Oscars. The story is gripping, and the actors (Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Connelly and Djimon Hounsou) are beyond phenomenal. While the Academy only selects five nominees for "Best Picture", Blood Diamond had to have been the 6th film, and the first one left off. It's that good.

While the feature presentation is reason enough to make Blood Diamond an instant purchase, the special features are arguably just as good. While all of the special features included on this two-disc special edition DVD are superb, it's the incredible commentary feature from the Director that really elevates this DVD to an entirely new dimension. On top of that you're looking at two equally-worthy commentary featurettes from two of the film's biggest stars: Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Connely. In each feature you'll get to see how each of them prepared for their roles, whether it be that of a war-hardened mercenary or a gutsy, noble journalist that is looking for the story of a lifetime. I really could go on and on with this DVD folks, but since it's my review policy to be short and concise, I am going to do just that. Enough talk - go buy this special edition DVD today. You've got arguably the best picture of the year coupled with some of the best special features you'll ever find on a DVD; if that isn't enough reason to make this purchase I don't know what is. Overall score - phenomenal, perfect, a must-have.
