When "Wind Waker" came out for the Nintendo GameCube, Legend of Zelda fanboys crapped their pants because the game's graphics looked too "cartoony" with cell-shaded technology. Once they realized throwing a hissy-fit wouldn't change the game and decided to give it a try, they fell in love with the game because it was so much fun to play. In A Scanner Darkly hit theaters the country reacted in a similar way, even with an All Star cast featuring Keanu Reeves (Woah), Robert Downey Jr., Woody Harrelson, Winona Ryder, and Rory Cochrane: "Why did they use cell shading for a big movie? It looks like a stupid cartoon; I don't want to see it." The people that looked past the abnormality visuals and actually went to watch this film were all rewarded, because A Scanner Darkly is an outstanding film. Thanks to Warner Bros that very film has finally been unleashed on DVD, and it's loaded with special features.
When you pick up this title from your favorite retailer, you're looking at a disgusting amount of special features that include audio commentary by Keanu Reeves, writer/director Richard Linklater, Producer Tommy Pallotta, Author Janathan Lethem and Philip K. Dick's daughter Isa Dick Hackett. Not too shabby, eh? Well it gets better because there's a lot more. You also get a huge behind the scenes documentary on how not only they filmed this flick but also how they went about creating it. On top of that you get the default theatrical trailer as well as a few short animations that are definitely worth the watch. From top to bottom A Scanner Darkly is a rock solid DVD that is a must have for anyone that enjoys good movies. Pick this one up today; you'll be pleasantly surprised!
