Embarrassing Moment - Bad Choice of Words

College, male, dating several girls, nothing serious. One evening I called a girl I hadn't talked to in a couple of weeks.

She answered the phone and I said, "Hi, Kathy. How's life?"

I had to use exactly those words. Her answer?

"My mother died last night."
