Assassin's Creed Preview

Posted December 31st, 2006

Giddy. In one word, that's how I would describe my excitement level for "Assassin's Creed". No you know what, fuck that. I don't think it's humanly possible to describe this ridiculously delectable game with just one palabra; Assassin's Creed for the PS3, 360, and PC looks to be the best video game release since the days of N64 in Ocarnia of Time. Yep, this title is going to be that good. From it's industry leading graphics to the revolutionary gameplay system, Assassin's Creed deserves the number one ranking on everyone's Most Wanted List. Before you read on however, you have to watch this gameplay video so we're all on the same page. I have to warn you however; once you watch that video, there's no going back. You will be hooked, you will be drooling; heck you might even masturbate, which would really be gross on second thought. However if there were a video game that was socially acceptable to rub one out to, Assassin's Creed is it. Watch the video people, then come back for the rest of this preview.

In AC you play as Altair, a ruthless assassin that threw his morals and probably the doctor out the hospital window at childbirth. Just like Mr. Chuck Norris, this guy is pretty badass. Each mission in the game centers around a major assassination, however it's much more complex than what you're thinking. At the start of each mission, all you're given is a name; no face, no picture, no clues. You need to explore each massive area picking up clues until you've found three of them, then and only then can you start figuring out who your target is. Altair can find clues by pickpocketing, talking to townspeople, and even eavesdropping on nearby conversations. Once you attain three or more clues, you can start searching for and stalking your prey using your intuition. After you discover your target, you need to start planning not only your way in but also your escape route, because once you stab that beeotch in the throat you better believe you're gonna be a popular dude with the guards.

Speaking of getting in and getting out, let's delve into the environment and just how revolutionary this bad boy is. First off you can scale just about any wall in the game, allowing you to get really creative with your route planning. On top of that, just about everything in the environment is destructible. Using the video as en example, after Altair stabs the target in the thrizoat he takes off running and destroys a huge wooden structure to block all the guards chasing him from behind. The crowd also plays a major role in getting in and getting out, as you can see from the video. To complete the job, Altair did a few favors for the local monks, allowing them to let him "blend in" which gets him deadly close to his unsuspecting victim. At the same time, the crowd can be a nuisance when you're making your getaway because if you run into one at full speed or is pissed off at you, you'll get knocked on your ass. If you think that's sweet from the gameplay department, wait 'til you hear this. If Altair starts doing socially unaccpetable things, like running at full speed, knocking things over, or more specifically scaling a wall in front of a hundred people, everyone in the crowd will notice. They'll stop what they're doing, tell their friends, and they'll point and yell which will draw unwanted attention your way. And by unwanted attention I mean guards. Pretty sweet, eh hoser?

Once again my fellow Lemmings, you honestly need to watch the gameplay video because words just don't do this game justice; even my words which are so eloquently written, which I know is hard to believe haha. Ubisoft has rumored to be working on a unique multiplayer mode for Assassin's Creed, however nothing has been confirmed as of today. According to the official AC website, the game has been delayed or "pushed back" to late 2007 which is fine by me, because I'd much rather have a late, perfect game than an early, shitty one. I cannot wait for this game. If you've read this preview and checked out the videos I bet you'll feel the same way. Assassin's Creed has Game of the Year written all over it, and for once I think this one will finally deliver. More news as it comes.
